Since the 1920's, lighters made of solid gold have been produced by lighter and jewelry manufacturers such as Dunhill, Ronson, Cartier, Hermes, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany and others for well-heeled smokers. Since the introduction of the Zippo, many beautiful gold lighters have been produced using the Zippo's ingenious design, many using original Zippo inserts. The Zippo Manufacturing Company produced solid gold Zippos, as did other manufacturers, presumably some with and some without license from Zippo. Most full-sized Zippos in gold do not have the canned bottoms or date stamps while most slim gold Zippos do.
